Remembering Newcastle's last meeting with Benfica ahead of summer pre-season friendly

With the News Newcastle United are set to face off against Portuguese side Benfica this summer in a pre-season friendly at the Estádio da Luz, ChronicleLive takes a look at the last time the two sides faced off way back in the 2012/13 season.

The pre-season friendly is Newcastle's third confirmed summer game, with ties against Atalanta and Athletic Bilbao set to take place in late July.

A magical 2011/12 campaign saw Newcastle finish the Premier League season in fifth place, earning them a spot in the Europa League the following season.

Alan Pardew's side finished second in their group behind Bordeaux, resulting in a round of 32 trip to Ukraine to face off against Metalist Kharkiv. A 0-0 draw at St James' Park in the first leg meant the Magpies needed a result in Ukraine to progress.

And thanks to a second-half Shola Ameobi penalty, Newcastle continued their European run, with a clash against Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala up next.

A similar tie ensued, with Newcastle needing a 94th minute winner from Papiss Cisse at St James' in the second leg to send them into the quarter-finals where they faced off against Benfica.

Things got off to a wonderful start for the Magpies in the first leg, with Cisse netting on 12 minutes to give Newcastle a vital away goal against Benfica. However, that lead was short lived when Rodrigo, now at Leeds United, followed up a parried Oscar Cardozo effort to level proceedings.

The second half saw the Portuguese side take control of the first leg. First, Brazilian forward Lima capitalised on a disastrous back pass from Davide Santon to fire past Tim Krul before a blatant handball from Newcastle defender Steven Taylor handed Cardozo a penalty, which he duly converted.

The first leg finished 3-1 leaving Newcastle with it all to do at St James' Park in the reverse fixture. Pardew's side were handed a lifeline through Cisse midway through the second half, leaving Newcastle needing just a single goal to send them through on away goals.

However, their European dreams were ended by Benfica in injury time, when a late run from Eduardo Salvio into the box saw the winger fire home from close range to make it 4-2 on aggregate, sending Newcastle out of the competition.

From there, Benfica went on to beat Fenerbahçe 3-2 in the semi-finals, earning themselves a tie with Rafa Benitez's Chelsea in Amsterdam. And former Newcastle boss Benitez helped Chelsea to their first ever Europa League crown, with Branislav Ivanovic's 93rd minute header sealing the European title for the Blues in a 2-1 win.
