Remake of 80s musical Little Shop of Horrors axed despite A-list cast of Hollywood stars

The big screen remake of 80s musical Little Shop of Horrors has been axed, despite an A-list cast of Hollywood stars.

The new version was set to star Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Taron Egerton.

But despite the stellar line-up, it’s been shelved – much to Taron’s dismay.

The Kingsman actor is desperate to take on the role of nerdy florist Seymour, who was played by Ghostbusters star Rick Moranis in the 1986 original.

But his dream role now looks like it will remain just that… a dream.

Production was supposed to start on the remake in 2020 but it was put on hold because of Covid.

And Taron has now confirmed the film has been binned altogether.

The Rocketman star says: “I just don’t get it. There was so much goodwill around it but it just fizzled out. Who knows if it will come back, but I can’t help but feel that it just might not.

“I love when Chris Evans talks about it because he’s keeping the hope alive, keeping that candle burning, but at the moment, my understanding is it’s completely dormant.”

Blackbird star Taron is fast becoming one of the world’s biggest movie stars – and the Golden Globe winner reckons that Seymour would be a perfect fit for him.

He says: “That is a role where I feel like I could genuinely do something with it a bit different.

“I think it is worthy of a reboot. Some reboots are cynical but some are inspired… I wish it would come back around but it’s out of my hands, unfortunately.”

Little Shop Of Horrors tells the story of geeky florist Seymour who buys an unusual plant to boost business and impress a girl – without realising that it has a thirst for blood.

It became a cult classic after it made its debut off Broadway in 1982. The original film version was directed by Frank Oz.
