Remaining Covid travel restrictions could be scrapped in the UK ‘within days’, it has been reported.
UK Government ministers are expected to discuss the future of passenger locator forms when they meet next week, according to the Daily Mail.
The forms were introduced during the early months of the pandemic to track where arrivals will stay during their time in the UK.
Officials are also considering dropping testing requirements for unvaccinated passengers.
Any decision made by the UK Government would only apply for arrivals heading into England.
However, the Scottish Government has largely followed its counterparts down south when it comes to drawing up its own Covid travel policies.
Current Covid travel rules in Scotland state that fully vaccinated passengers are not required to take any tests prior to travel.
Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people must take a Covid test prior to arrival and further PCR test within two days after touching down in Scotland.
All passengers must complete a passenger locator form regardless of vaccination status.
Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has said that scrapping the passenger locator form is ‘long overdue’.
He said: “It’s a shambles. They should ditch it, it’s completely irrelevant. Nobody collects them, nobody checks them or follows up on them.
“They were designed to pretend that the politicians were doing something to protect people.”
A spokesperson for the Scottish Government said: “The introduction of travel restrictions was necessary to protect the roll out of the booster programme and reduce the chances of unsustainable pressure being placed on the NHS over the winter.
“The restrictions are subject to review on a four nations basis and we will be able to say more in the near future. We will not keep restrictions in place any longer than is necessary.”
A number of the remaining Covid restrictions in Scotland are expected to be lifted over the coming weeks.
The legal requirement to wear face coverings in certain indoor settings and public transport is set to end on March 21.
It is also expected that businesses will also no longer be required to take customer details for contact tracing purposes from this date.
Laws of Scotland’s vaccine passport scheme were also removed on February 28.
