Refugee left in ‘hostile environment’ by Border Patrol before his death, say family

  • Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a 56-year-old visually impaired Rohingya refugee, was found dead in Buffalo, New York, five days after being dropped off by Border Patrol agents.
  • The Erie County Medical Examiner's Office ruled his death a homicide, attributing it to complications from an ulcer precipitated by hypothermia and dehydration.
  • Shah Alam was released from jail into the custody of Customs and Border Protection, who then dropped him outside a closed Tim Horton's coffee shop on 19 February, despite his vulnerabilities.
  • New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James are among officials demanding accountability and investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
  • Homeland Security, however, denied responsibility, attributing his death to a 'serial violent criminal rap sheet' and calling it a 'hoax'.
