Refugee charity gets huge porridge donation from UCI after world champs

A REFUGEE charity has received a giant donation of porridge from the organisers of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships following Glasgow’s hosting of the event.

The community-led charity -  which helps people feel welcome in Scotland after being forced to flees their homes – announced it has received five palettes of porridge pots from UCI on Wednesday morning which will initially be made available to anyone living in hotels before being used in welcome packs.

The cause was set up in 2015 by Selina Hales and has provided more than 10,000 community-built, personal welcome packs and emergency support packs to people all over Glasgow and Scotland.

Glaswegians enjoyed a jam-packed 10 days of cycling action recently at the likes of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and on the roads in the city centre.

A video posted on Instagram shows shelves being filled up with pots after dozens of boxes were delivered by UCI.

An Instagram post from Refuweegee said: “This morning 5 palettes of porridge pots were dropped off at our HQ donated by @uci_cycling @uci_cyclingworlds.

“With the help of our very own Rita, Jen, Kaye and Paul from @nfu_mutual and some mini volunteers we managed to make enough space to store it all.

“We plan to make this porridge available to anyone living in hotels as part of our Hotel Foodbank.

“The rest will go into the next batches of welcome packs as it makes the ideal Scottish item.

“Big thank you to @uci_cycling @uci_cyclingworlds for thinking of us to donate to!”
