Reform UK's Scottish leader Malcolm Offord has revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer just hours before being elected to Holyrood earlier this year.
The MSP said he recently underwent surgery to remove his prostate and is now recovering well.
Offord made the comments during an appearance with comedian and broadcaster Matt Forde at the Edinburgh Fringe, after his hospital wristband was noticed on stage.
Explaining the wristband, Offord said: "I had a procedure last Wednesday to remove my prostate, so I am now clear.
"I went in yesterday to get the catheter bag removed and I was told to keep the band on for 24 hours, but I am feeling pretty good so I think I will take it off at the end of the show."
The politician said he received final confirmation of his diagnosis on May 7, the day of the Scottish Parliament election.
He described learning he had cancer on the same day he was elected as the "weirdest thing".
During the event, Offord was asked whether having cancer had been more painful than serving as an MSP and attending First Minister's Questions.
He replied: "The prostate is out and gone and I can move on, but I still have five more years of FMQs.
"It is routine - I am 61 and it happens in a lot of men my age.
"But the good news is that medics are all over this, they know how to fix it.
"There is plenty of life after, so you need to get checked - every male in the room knows they need to get checked."
Offord's comments come as health charities continue to encourage men to be aware of prostate cancer symptoms and seek medical advice if they have concerns.
