Recycling centre remains closed after blaze damages building

A recycling centre in South Gloucestershire is to stay shut until later this week after a fire broke out there yesterday (May 17).

The huge fire at the recycling centre in Mangotsfield saw locals being told to keep windows and doors shut as fire crews from eight stations in Bristol attended the blaze. In total, 10 fire engines, a drone unit and welfare unit attended the huge fire on Carsons Road - the cause of which is thought to be accidental.

A significant amount of refuse caught fire at one of the non-recyclable waste areas at the Mangotsfield tip on Carsons Road. The road was blocked as people were urged to avoid the area.

South Gloucestershire Council has today provided an update on when the recycling centre will reopen. It said: "The site will remain closed to the public today (May 18) and tomorrow (May 19) while electrical and structural surveys are carried out. We’ll update information about reopening the site once we know the results.

"Our recycling collection vehicles will continue to unload at the site, as the area they use is on the other side of the yard and safe to access. The recycling centres at Yate, Thornbury and Little Stoke are all open, but are likely to be busier and there are restrictions in place at the smaller site in Little Stoke."

Following a brief investigation, it has been confirmed the cause of the fire was accidental. South Gloucestershire Council said in a statement that the fire was at one of the non-recyclable waste areas, and urged locals to use one of its other refuse centres today.

A statement from Avon Fire and Rescue reads: "At 10.50am crews from Kingswood, Hicks Gate, Temple, Yate, Portishead, Southmead, Pill and Avonmouth were mobilised to reports of a fire at a refuse centre on Carsons Road, Mangotsfield.

"Firefighters used two 45mm jets, two high pressure hose reels and multiple thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the blaze. 12 firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety.

"The service drone was also in use to check the severity of the blaze. Positive pressure ventilation fans were used to clear smoke logging from the building.

"Mechanical machinery was used on site to dig out materials to extinguish the flames. In total, 10 fire engines, the drone unit and the welfare unit attended the scene. The cause of the fire is thought to be accidental.

"During the incident, local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area. This guidance has now been removed as the fire has been extinguished."
