Record Store Day 2023: 20 of the rarest vinyl worth up to £5,000 - check your collection

Some old vinyl records could be worth over £5,000 so you may want to have a root through your old collection for a possible gem this Record Store Day.

After taking a few decades off, vinyl has made quite the comeback in recent years with sales of LPs having risen year on year for the last decade.

As records have already been massively popular before, many Brits are likely to have old music collections sitting in their loft.

If this is you, then you may want to dust them off and take a look as you could potentially be sat on a small fortune.

For National Record Store Day, Scotland’s debt specialist Carrington Dean, and compiled a list of 20 records which could be worth a lot of cash if sold today.

The Beatles took the top spot with their 1963 pressing of Please Please Me, with fans paying up to £5,100 for an original copy.

When initially released, the scouse band's debut album held the top spot in the charts for 30 weeks.

David Bowie’s Space Oddity took second place with fans paying up around £3,200 for the record, and another music legend followed behind with Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon selling for £3,150.

Carrington Dean found that nostalgia played a huge part as big 1960’s artists like David Bowie, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who and Led Zeppelin topped the table of the most valuable pressings, averaging at £3,216.

However, two albums post-millennia albums did make it into the top 20 list - in fact, one even made it into the top five.

Beyonce’s 2016 original boxset of How to make Lemonade retailed for around £2,750 on the secondhand sales website while Lady Gaga’s 2011 album Born This Way usually went for around £1,300.

Layla Johnson, regional manager at Carrington Dean said: “National Record Store Day is a celebration of independent record stores and the unique culture they promote.

"It’s an opportunity to appreciate the value of physical music, support local businesses and as the research shows their popularity is still going strong.

“Often left on display or tucked away in a box, the value of records is constantly changing and evolving.

"Whether you’re strapped for cash or are just curious about how much you could fetch for your old records, it may be worth taking those old pressings down to your local record store to see how much they are worth and potentially gain a nice bonus during these challenging times.”
