Record El Nino to unleash floods and extreme heat until 2027

• El Nino is forecast to intensify into one of the strongest weather events on record, threatening floods, drought, and extreme heat through to 2027.
• The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) says there is a near 100 per cent likelihood the climate phenomenon will persist until February 2027.
• UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned the planet is in uncharted waters as El Nino is being supersized before our eyes.
• Driven by exceptionally warm conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean, sub-surface ocean temperatures reached more than 8C above average in July and August.
• The WMO has launched a major global mobilisation across national weather services to prepare for potential disruption to global economies and communities.
