Americans are paying more for groceries and throwing more of them away. That is the squeeze behind a wave of recall notices this year, and the piece that gets the least attention is the simplest one: most shoppers are never told directly that food already sitting in their kitchen has been pulled.
The FDA's Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation table, last updated on September 2, lists 16 investigations in its active section, twelve of them tied to outbreaks still classified as ongoing. Case counts have kept moving. A Salmonella Newport cluster with no identified food rose from 84 to 97 cases, a Salmonella Oranienburg cluster stands at 99, and one Cyclospora cluster was adjusted from 203 to 225.
