Rebels in the southern region of Syria have reportedly seized control of a significant government military base in Daraa province following a fresh offensive launched on Friday. The rebels claimed to have taken over Brigade 52, the second-largest military base in the province, located near the town of al-Hirak.

Video footage that was geolocated showed rebel fighters engaged in a firefight with regime forces in the vicinity of Brigade 52. The Southern Operations Room, a newly established coalition representing the southern rebels, announced that their fighters had successfully liberated Brigade 52 in eastern Daraa after engaging in battles with regime troops stationed at the base.

Brigade 52 has been accused of involvement in the shelling of civilians in the city of Daraa during the period between 2012 and 2015, which marked the peak of Syria's civil war. The capture of this military base represents a significant strategic gain for the rebel forces operating in the region.

The development comes amidst ongoing conflict and instability in Syria, with various factions vying for control of territory across the war-torn country. The rebels' successful offensive in Daraa province underscores the continued challenges faced by the Syrian government in maintaining control over certain areas.

The situation in Syria remains fluid and complex, with multiple actors involved in the conflict, including rebel groups, government forces, and external powers. The capture of Brigade 52 by the southern rebels is likely to have broader implications for the dynamics of the conflict in the region and could potentially shift the balance of power in favor of the opposition forces.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community closely monitors developments in Syria, seeking to address the humanitarian crisis and work towards a sustainable resolution to the long-standing conflict that has ravaged the country for years.
