The age-old warning children still hear is: "Don't go outside with wet hair, you'll catch a cold". Despite most growing up with the warning, it's not the real reason you should avoid stepping outside with soggy hair.
There is little scientific evidence to support the theory linking wet hair and coming down with the common cold - but there is actually a good reason to stay inside until your hair is dry.
Apparently setting foot outside the house with wet hair on a chilly day can cause your hair some serious damage. Speaking to Insider, hairdresser Jason Collier explained the cold can make hair more vulnerable to damage.

He said: "Cold weather can exacerbate hair breakage in wet hair, causing strands to snap off.
"The water penetrates the hair shaft, and if that water comes down to freezing temperature, it expands in volume, forcing the hair shaft to expand, lifting the cuticles and leaving the hair exposed to environmental damage."
The stylist, who does the hair of celebs like Eva Longoria and Victoria Beckham, said it can also "stiffen" the hair strand so it is more susceptible to snapping. Not ideal if you're trying to grow your hair out.
The best thing for people to do in the winter months is to avoid washing your hair if you don't have time to dry it, which either means getting up earlier in the morning or doing it the night before.
As well as following Jason's advice, there are plenty of things you can do to improve the health of your hair in the chilly weather. If your hair is prone to dryness, try to use deep conditioning treatments at home or at the hairdresser.
It may also be worth ditching hot styling tools like curlers and straighteners for a bit to give your hair a rest.
