The Queen always carried a second pair of gloves in her bag after being left 'furious' at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The late monarch was left with a gaping hole which she only discovered as she waved the the crown at the 2011 ceremony.
It is reported that she was far from happy at not looking her absolute best in front of a watching worldwide audience of 162 million.
So from the on, she brought with her a spare pair to every engagement in case of another hand-shaped mishap.
The sovereign always had a well-oiled team behind her but she was not best pleased when they failed to spot the fashion faux pas.
It was referred to at internally at the Palace as 'Holegate' - and staff were keen there was no repeat.
She tactfully covered the split up with her right hand in the carriage transporting her back to Buckingham Palace from Westminster Abbey.
Stylist Bernard Connolly was working for the Queen at the time.
He said that the Queen was left mortified by what happened and took steps to make sure she was never in that position again.
"How it wasn't written about at the time, I will never know, the Queen went out and waved to the world with a hole in her glove – can you imagine?" he told the Mail On Sunday.
"You don't do that, you wouldn't do it in a fashion show, or in a photo shoot, and you certainly wouldn't do it to a monarch.
"It was not just any engagement, but the future King getting married."
The Queen was apparently angry that no one had seen the slit before she went outside.
According to former royal butler Paul Burrell she picks her outfits - or as she calls them, "costumes" - in a rather unusual way.
Speaking to Yahoo's The Royal Box in 2019, he said: "The Queen has to have her outfits brought down to her, all her clothes are kept on the top floor.
"Her dresser will bring down two outfits in the morning, which are sketched with pieces of material clipped to them so that the Queen can remember whether it’s silk or cotton or wool.
"The one the Queen picks is the one which is brought downstairs from up above so she doesn’t actually see her wardrobe with clothes in it."
