Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior is eagerly anticipating the FIFA's 'The Best' awards, set to take place in Doha, Qatar. This prestigious event will unveil the top men's and women's soccer players of 2024, determined through a voting process involving fans, national team captains and coaches, as well as media representatives. Often likened to the esteemed Ballon d'Or prize, FIFA's 'The Best' awards hold significant weight in the football world.
Vinícius Júnior, who was notably absent from the Ballon d'Or ceremony in protest after losing out to Rodri, is among the 11 players shortlisted for the best men's player award. The ceremony coincides with Madrid's participation in the Intercontinental Cup final against Pachuca, adding to the anticipation surrounding Vinícius' potential win.
The men's player shortlist also features prominent names like Rodri, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi, the latter being the previous year's recipient. On the women's side, Aitana Bonmati, who clinched the best women's player award in 2023, aims for a consecutive win after a stellar year with Barcelona.
The selection criteria for the awards are based on player performances from August 21, 2023, to August 10, 2024. FIFA employs an 'equally weighted voting system' involving fans, captains, coaches, and media to determine the deserving winners across various categories.
Aside from the best players, the ceremony will also unveil the best coaches and goalkeepers for both men's and women's categories. Additionally, the best men's and women's 11s will be announced, along with the Marta and Puskás Awards recognizing outstanding goals in women's and men's soccer, respectively.
The gala dinner at the Aspire Academy in Doha will be graced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, adding to the grandeur of the event that celebrates the pinnacle of football excellence.
