The English Football League (EFL) on Friday levied charges against Reading Football Club for multiple breaches of its regulations. These charges are in relation to the club's failure to fulfill their obligations of paying their players' wages on three separate occasions during the previous season.
Previously, in April, Reading had already incurred a six-point deduction after acknowledging their non-compliance with budget restrictions.
Unfortunately for the club, this deduction ultimately led to their relegation from the Championship, the second-tier of English football. They finished in 22nd place, falling six points short of the safety zone.
The combination of financial irregularities and the subsequent points deduction dealt a significant blow to Reading's aspirations, resulting in their demotion from the Championship.
"The charges relate to the club failing to meet their obligations to pay its players' wages on time and in full on or around 31 October 2022, 30 November 2022 and 28 April 2023," the EFL said in a statement.
"Yongge Dai, the club's owner, has also been charged with causing the club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the club."
The EFL said Reading and Dai have until June 29 to respond to the charges.
