A re-opening date has been revealed for a much-loved Cardiff park which was shut for essential maintenance work. Cardiff Council has announced that Grangemoor Park in Grangetown will re-open to the public on the week commencing Monday, December 19.
Grangemoor Park was closed to the public in January to allow safety work to be carried out on the former landfill site that sits underneath the green space. A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: "Due to the nesting season some of the planned works had to be delayed this year, but this work is now progressing well and the park should be re-opened by Christmas.
"We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience. Natural Resources Wales and specialist consultants are working with the council throughout the project to ensure all relevant environmental legislation is followed." It was envisaged that the park would only be closed until the middle of June. However, the closure was extended until the end of the year.

The existing pathways and access to the park have also been upgraded for park users. This is also to ensure that the infrastructure on-site can now be easily accessed and maintained by the council. The essential maintenance work on the park included the renewal of leachate and methane gas equipment on the former landfill site underneath the park.
The site at Ferry Road, which took in 4 million tonnes of rubbish before its closure, had been leaking leachate into the Bay since at least 2017. You can read more about that here.
