Rays’ Shane McClanahan to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Rays ace Shane McClanahan will undergo Tommy John surgery on Monday and likely miss the entire 2024 MLB season, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

The news comes one week after the Rays placed McClanahan on the 15-day injured list after he felt tightness in his left forearm. At the time, manager Kevin Cash said it was “highly unlikely” the 26-year-old would pitch again this season, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

McClanahan becomes the third Tampa Bay starting pitcher to suffer a season-ending injury this season. Jeffrey Springs and Drew Rasmussen both underwent Tommy John surgery recently.

Before McClanahan was placed on the IL for the second time this season last week, the two-time All-Star was compiling a stellar season, notching an 11-2 record in 21 starts. The 26-year-old posted a 3.29 ERA while recording 121 strikeouts in 115 innings.

McClanahan’s latest appearance on the mound came on Wednesday against the Yankees. He left the game after allowing five runs in fourth inning.

Currently, the Rays (72-49) sit in second place in the AL East behind the division-leading Orioles.
