Even in October, the Rays struggle to draw big crowds. During their Wild Card series clash against the Rangers, fans in Tampa Bay did not show out in droves to support their team.
After setting a 104-year attendance low in Game 1, when 19,704 fans filed into Tropicana Field, things got a little bit better for Wednesday’s Game 2, but not by much.
According to Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times, attendance for the second game of the series was 20,198.
In total, across the Rays’ two home postseason games, there were a combined 39,901 fans in attendance.
The combined recorded attendance at Tropicana Field for Games 1 and 2 was smaller than the attendance of the postseason series openers in Philadelphia and Milwaukee, and just barely surpassed the attendance for Game 1 in Minnesota.
Game of 1 the Phillies-Marlins Wild Card series at Citizens Bank Park had a recorded attendance of 45,662. 40,892 fans were at American Family Field for the series opener between the Diamondbacks and Brewers. 38,450 people attended the first game of the Blue Jays vs. Twins series at Target Field.
The Rays were eliminated on Wednesday in a 7–1 defeat against the Rangers, who are set to take on the Orioles in the ALDS in a series that figures to have plenty more fans filling the seats.
