A clean-up operation has taken place in an Ayrshire town – after a blocked main sewer caused a stink yesterday.
The blockage resulted in raw sewage spewing out of its location and onto the High Street in Maybole.
The foul odour emanated from the Castle Street area and cascaded onto the busy High Street where there’s housing, Chinese and Indian takeaways, as well as a Co-op store across the road.
Thankfully, though, the blockage was reported and Scottish Water were soon on the scene to carry out repairs.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Following a report of some waste water flooding in Castle Street, Maybole, investigations were carried out and we found a blockage in a connection to the main sewer.
“This was cleared and a clean up of the area has been carried out.
“Our infrastructure is now working as it should. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Some residents took to social media, with one saying: “I see there’s raw sewage running down Castle Street onto the High Street, again.”
But a spokesperson for Maybole Community Council insisted it was not aware of any ‘ongoing’ sewage problems in the area, adding: “This was not reported to the community council and the first we heard was when we saw a Facebook post.
“Equally, we are not aware of an ongoing problem, although it said “again” in the post.”
Scottish Water has stated there was “no sign” of wet wipes causing the blockage, but have taken the opportunity to remind members of the public about their ‘Nature Calls’ campaign, which urges everyone to help protect the local environment.
The spokesperson added: “Items wrongly flushed down the toilet, or put down drains (fats, oils and grease), don’t break down in the sewer and can cause blockages.”
