In a move that many believe should have been made long ago, the New York Giants parted ways with quarterback Daniel Jones this past week. He will hit free agency after clearing waivers, and will be free to sign with any team, and he may not waste too much time doing so.
Daniel Jones May Not Be Unemployed For Long
According to reports that came out over the weekend, Jones shouldn’t be out of work for long. He wants to continue playing in 2024, and has his sights set on joining a team that is in the thick of a playoff or championship chase. He prefers to have the potential to be involved in big games down the stretch, rather than join a quarterback-needy team that is already out of contention.
Which teams might be interested? NFL inside Adam Schefter shed some light on the situation on Sunday morning, and even named a couple of teams that might be interested in the services of Daniel Jones as a backup.
The first team mentioned was the Baltimore Ravens. John Harbaugh’s team of course has the reigning MVP as their quarterback, but they may be looking to upgrade the backup position out of caution. It is currently journeyman Josh Johnson who occupies the #2 spot behind Lamar Jackson, but the 38-year-old has thrown just 3 total passes since the end of the 2021 campaign. With Jones now being the best free agent option on the market, it would make sense for Baltimore to bring in someone more reliable in the case of any unfortunate injury to Jackson.

Another team that Schefter mentioned was the Minnesota Vikings. Sam Darnold has been one of the pleasant surprises of 2024, and has his team at 8-2 after winning five straight contests. But they could use some insurance of a recent starter like Daniel Jones, as their depth chart currently lists Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien as the contingency plans.
According to the Schefter report, the results from the Week 12 games will factor into the decision that Jones makes.
Since being selected with the 6th overall pick back in 2019, Daniel Jones has gone 24-44-1 as a starter. The last two campaigns have been particularly poor, as he has thrown 10 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions, while sporting a 3-13 record in 16 games played. The Giants will be on the hook for just over $22 million in dead money for 2025 by parting ways with their quarterback.
