Ravens OC Todd Monken discusses decision of WR Zay Flowers to not go down on touchdown late in Week 12 vs. Chargers

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Los Angeles Chargers by the final score of 20-10 in Week 12, earning their ninth win of the 2023 season. They enter their Week 13 bye week at 9-3 and on top of the AFC, feeling good about where they are but always looking to improve.

Late in the team’s contest in Los Angeles, wide receiver Zay Flowers broke off a long touchdown run to put Baltimore up by two scores. The decision was controversial even to Flowers’ teammates, and when asked about it, offensive coordinator Todd Monken re-iterated that Flowers needs to get down instead of score in that situation.

“100%. Tell everybody we go down – first down, get down. Yes, that’s normal. That would’ve ended the game right there. Then, we wouldn’t have had to see another silly touchdown celebration by Zay [Flowers].” (laughter) “That would’ve saved us all from that. The fact of the matter is, you have to tell them to get down and end the game. That’s something you have to tell them. That’s on me.”
