Rats, broken toilets and collapsing ceilings: Why 1,800 French high schools were blocked or closed as 250,000 people took to the streets

France’s classrooms have become the centre of a national revolt. More than 250,000 students and supporters marched nationwide on October 6, according to government figures. Around 56,000 joined the Paris demonstration.

An earlier Interior Ministry count recorded 86,000 marchers outside Paris before the capital’s rally began. The swelling numbers show how quickly the France school protests have moved beyond a dispute.
