Everton have suffered their first defeat at home under Sean Dyche after Aston Villa grinded out a 2-0 away win at Goodison Park.
In a tight game, the Blues went close to taking a second half lead when Neal Maupay's goal-bound effort was hooked off the line before Jordan Pickford pulled off a wonder save to deny Ollie Watkins' header.
But the Villa forward would have the final say, converting from the spot moment's late after Idrissa Gueye was adjudged to have brought down John McGinn. And then Emiliano Buendia rubbed salt into the wounds by wrapping up the three points with a fine individual effort.
