We’re down to just 58 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 regular season, which means Rashid Shaheed’s 58-yard touchdown catch against the Indianapolis Colts last year is the Saints Play of the Day.
Both teams traded body blows inn the first half, with the Colts jumping out to a 17-7 lead before the Saints responded with a 20-yard Taysom Hill touchdown run and this deep shot to Shaheed to take a 21-17 lead. A Colts field goal closed the gap before halftime, but it was all New Orleans in the second half. Hill scored again (and so did Alvin Kamara, who found the end zone twice) and the Saints cruised to a 38-27 victory on the road.
Shaheed emerged as one of Derek Carr’s favorite targets last season, following up his 488-yard rookie year with a 719-yard breakout campaign. And while he only had three receptions in this game he gained 153 yards off of them, including this long touchdown. The hope is for him to take another big step forward with Klint Kubiak drawing up plays, and it couldn’t happen at a better time with Shaheed playing out the last year of his contract. If all goes as planned he’ll cash in on a lucrative contract next spring — hopefully with the Saints.
