Rare Welsh ponies close to being burnt alive after major fire

Rare ponies came close to being burnt alive after a barbecue was left unattended near sand dunes. Following the close call, owner Berwyn Jones pleaded with the public to act more responsibly and to treat the countryside with respect.

Berwyn is a farmer from Llanfairfechan in Conwy and runs a conservation grazing business that improves wildlife habitats at several sites around north and mid Wales. Along with RSPB Cymru, Natural Resources Wales and North Wales Wildlife Trust, he has a team of more than 60 ponies redeployed from the Carneddau mountains in Snowdonia, North Wales Live reports.

Some of his ponies graze on a 40-acre parcel of marshland and sand dunes running from Presthaven Sands to Talacre lighthouse, Flintshire. It’s part of the Gronant Dunes and Talacre Warren SSSI, the only site in Wales that’s home to natterjack toads.
