One individual will be kicking themselves right about now, after learning the value of a Tom Brady item that was purchased for over $3 million has plummeted.
In 2021, an unnamed individual purchased a Tom Brady trading card for $3.107 million at an auction. The card had been a 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Mint 9 graded card - from Brady's rookie season.
The card is signed by Brady himself, and is considered to be the rarest card in existence - being a collector's dream with trading cards still popular to this day.
However, just a few months after retiring, the value of the card has plummeted - with it recently being valued at just $386,957 - with the buyer potentially out of pocket more than $2 million, and the deal being dubbed as the worst card purchase of all-time.
The news had circulated on social media, with fans devastated for the buyer, but also questioning whether the valuation had been correct.
One wrote: "That's one of Brady's best cards. It'll go right back up in years to come, keep hold of it," as another tweeted: "It will take time but this will be more than $3 million I bet you."
Some of the most valuable cards are that of retired players, with the recipient likely to keep hold of it in hopes to see it's value rise over the coming years.
Brady retired from the NFL in February - the second time he had done so after retiring in 2022 before coming back for a final season, his third with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - but he insisted this time it would be for good.
In a career that spanned two decades with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, confirmed his decision in a video posted to social media in Miami.
He said: "I'll get to the point right away. I'm retiring. For good. I know the process was a pretty big deal last time so I woke up this morning I figured I'd just press record and let you guys know first so, it won't be long winded.
"You only get one super emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year, so really thank you guys so much for supporting me. My family, my friends, my teammates, my competitors - I could go on forever, there's too many. Thank you guys for allowing me to live my absolute dream. I wouldn't change a thing. Love you all."
Brady is now taking a year away from the sport, before his expected return as an analyst with FOX Sports after signing a 10-year contract worth $375 million (£306m) with the broadcaster.
