Rare puppies who will grow into 'giants' desperately need new homes

They're a rare breed in the UK - and can cost up to £2,000 when sold by a breeder. Two Presa Canario puppies, named Wotsit and Pringle, have been put up for adoption with the RSPCA's Leeds, Wakefield and District Branch Animal Centre.

Despite being under six-months-old, the puppies have been introduced to "lots of new things to help them be brave in this big wide world". They need to join a dog-free home with experienced owners and can live with older children who are confident with large dogs as both Wotsit and Pringle will be "giant" when fully grown.

Wotsit is under six-months-old (RSPCA)

Speaking about Wotsit, a statement reads: "He is a cheeky chappie who all the ladies at the animal centre love.

"He is super intelligent and has been learning loads with the animal care team. They've been teaching them some manners around people and other dogs."

When speaking about Pringle, it continues: "She is a super sweet and affectionate girl who loves to play. She would love a family who she can have lots of fun with and can teach her lots of new things."

The Presa Canario is a Spanish breed of mastiff or catch dog type which originates from the Canary Islands. The breed is mostly found on the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

The RSPCA is urging people to turn to adoption centres rather than breeders when wanting to welcome a new pet into their home.

"While it may be easy to find animals on the internet or even spend hundreds on an expensive breeder, you could risk heartache or huge vet's bills if you don't do your homework," a statement reads.

"By adopting and not shopping you'll also feel good for doing good - by giving an animal a second chance at life in a loving home!

"Plus, adopting from us means that you can relax knowing that all our animals are healthy, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

"As with all the animals we rehome, we'll pass on the details of their behaviour and veterinary treatment. You'll likely know more about your rescue animal's history than if you were to buy an animal online!

"We've taken the time to get to know each animal as an individual, to understand their likes and dislikes and to prepare them for life in a loving family, which means there are less likely to be nasty surprises when you get home!

"When you adopt a cat or a dog from one of our centres, you'll also get four weeks free pet insurance, which is vital to protect your pet's future as well as your bank balance! There's so much to gain from rescuing an animal in need."

If you're interested in rehoming Wotsit or Pringle, contact the RSPCA's Leeds, Wakefield and District Branch Animal Centre on 01132 536952 or email them via info@rspcaleedsandwakefield.org.uk.

The centre is open from 10am to 4pm every day except Wednesdays, with viewings from 11am to 3pm.
