Rare giant tortoise species thought to have died out 100 years ago found alive and well

A tortoise species thought to have gone extinct more than a century ago is happily living on the Galápagos Islands today.

Researchers have confirmed that a female tortoise - named Fernanda after the island Fernandina she was discovered on - is from a species last identified in 1906.

She was spotted in 2019 but it's only now that experts have been able to prove it is a Fernandina Island Galápagos giant tortoise - Chelonoidis phantasticus, or "fantastic giant tortoise".
