Rare daytime fireball sighting explained by NASA

  • A rare daytime fireball, confirmed by Nasa as a meteor, was observed across parts of northeastern America on Tuesday afternoon.
  • More than 200 eyewitness reports from states including Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and Connecticut helped officials track its trajectory.
  • The meteor first appeared 48 miles above the Atlantic Ocean near Long Island, traveling southwest at about 30,000 miles per hour.
  • It disintegrated roughly 27 miles above Galloway, New Jersey, between 2.30pm and 2.45pm, with many witnesses seeing a bright flash around 2.35-2.40pm.
  • Some observers also reported seeing multiple green fragments and hearing a loud boom, underscoring the unusual nature of such a widely visible daylight event.
