Rare cell therapy helps 2 patients from Pune reverse bone death syndrome

PUNE: Two patients from Pune district — a 57-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman — have undergone a radical cell therapy to treat the hip's AVN (Avascular Necrosis), also known as 'bone death syndrome' in the past 12 months.

Dr Ashish Arbat, senior joint replacement surgeon at Jehangir hospital said, "The AVN disease had restricted both patients' day-to-day activities. They were operated with bone-cell therapy using the country's first and only DCGI-approved Ossgrow, a targeted and personalised cell therapy-based solution to reverse the effects of AVN."

The therapy involves injecting the patient's own healthy cells into affected regions where bone deterioration has occurred.

The 57-year-old male, from Kopargaon, was detected with AVN in both the hips. The left side of his hip was in the third stage of AVN and beyond repair. But the right side of the hip showed early signs of AVN and was administered cell therapy in December last year. His healthy bone cells were extracted from his bone marrow and later, the lab-cultured bone cells were deposited back into the AVN-affected hip region.

The other patient from Pune — the 36-year-old woman — too was administered bone therapy last year after she started to experience early signs of AVN.

In the woman's case, Dr Arbat said, "She's a young woman who was planning to start a family. But she was experiencing complications, pain and discomfort. The condition later worsened and she became incapable of walking or even sitting. Her X-ray showed early signs of AVN. But we were eventually able to treat her with a single administration of bone-cell therapy.”
