Rare artefact dug up by Nottinghamshire schoolboy reaches £4000 at auction

A rare medieval priory seal matrix which is thought to be 800 years old has raised £4000 at an auction in Derbyshire. The rare find was discovered by a child from Nottinghamshire while out on a walk.

George Henderson, 10, is a metal detectorist who was out on a walk with his father in Woodbridge, Suffolk. He discovered the copper-alloy object before digging it up and bringing the seal to be examined and valued.

George said he was delighted to discover the object and it was the most exciting item they had found so far. The father and son were taking part in a charity dig, raise money for the Air Ambulance, when they discovered the item buried about five inches in the ground, just ten minutes into the event.
