Rapist's death on remand at Scots prison to be probed in Fatal Accident Inquiry

An inquiry will be held into the death of a rapist at Low Moss prison. Paul Dowds died in hospital after collapsing while on remand at the Bishopbriggs jail.

Glasgow Sheriff Court will hear details of the circumstances leading up to his death at a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) in the new year, reports Glasgow Live.

The 45-year-old was a convicted sex offender who was sentenced to seven years in 2007 for rape. Dowds had previously flouted the terms of the sex offenders' register by going AWOL in his native Greenock for almost a week.

He went missing and was later tracked down to Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital 220 miles from home — after being stabbed.

Dowds was found three weeks after he vanished from Greenock, amid reports he'd been stabbed by a vigilante gang.

In May 2018, he and his accomplice, half- brother Kevin Johnston, 41, were caught trying to rob a sheltered housing complex in Greenock.

A court heard the pair left an 83-year-old man in fear as they tried to break into his flat. They were both given three-month terms but were released around a week later.

It is understood that he was suffering from a medical condition when he died while awaiting trial on an assault charge in the East Dunbartonshire jail.

The preliminary stage of the FAI is scheduled to take place in Glasgow on December 19, with the full set to run over two days between March 30 and 31.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory in Scotland when a prisoner dies in custody and aims to establish if anything could reasonably been done to prevent the death.
