Raphael Varane wears special Manchester United shirt in memory of Gordon McQueen vs Leeds

Manchester United and Leeds United paid tribute to former defender Gordon McQueen ahead of Wednesday's pre-season friendly in Oslo.

Ahead of kick-off at the Ullevaal Stadion, both sets of players gathered around the centre circle to pay tribute to the Scot, who died last month at the age of 70, and participated in a minute's applause. McQueen represented both United and Leeds during his playing career.

The Scot, who died after a battle with dementia, spent six years at Leeds before joining the Reds in February 1978 for £495,000, which, at the time, made him Britain's most expensive footballer. He made 229 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals.

During his time at United, McQueen, who was also a Scotland international, won two major trophies, featuring the 1983 FA Cup. He retired just a year after leaving the Reds in 1985.

As well as both sets of players and everyone else inside the Ullevaal Stadion paying their respects via a minute's applause pre-match, United stand-in captain Raphael Varane donned a special shirt in tribute to McQueen. Instead of wearing a shirt with 'Varane 19' on the back, he wore one that read 'McQueen 5'.

Leeds captain Liam Cooper also donned a shirt in tribute to McQueen, featuring the same name and number on the back. Both players, however, did change into their own shirts, featuring their own names and respective numbers, once the game got underway.

It was a lovely touch from both clubs, who put their rivalry aside to come together to appreciate one of the sport's all-time greats.
