'Rank' or 'brilliant'? Aberdeen's new northern lights-inspired kit divides fans

ABERDEEN FC fans have been left divided after the club revealed its new away kit based on the aurora borealis.

The Northern Lights-inspired jersey was unveiled on Tuesday morning, and is a reference to the 1950s song The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen.

The song is played at Aberdeen FC’s home ground Pittodrie Stadium before each game.

The club said in a statement: “As we get set for a return to European football for 23/24 we are excited to present The Northern Lights kit.

“Inspired by the sights and colours often found in the sky that are synonymous with our special part of the world, our brand-new away kit features cosmic swirls on a black base, replicating the night sky when the ‘heavenly dancers’ come out to play.”

Quoting the club anthem, Aberdeen FC added on Twitter: “She called them the heavenly dancers, merry dancers in the sky.”

The kit divided fans as it was labelled “rank” and “horrendous”, but some said its design and links to the club meant it would have a long-lasting impact.

“That’s an absolute abomination,” one fan wrote. “Adidas absolutely shafting us man,” another added.

The DiscussDandies fan account wrote: “It’s definitely a marmite isn’t it? Think I’m leaning towards being not keen to be honest…”

But on the other side, one Twitter user wrote: “Can’t decide, veering toward brilliant rather than sh**,” another wrote. “Either way it’s a memorable kit with a link to the city and our favourite song that we can do damage in Europe with. Thumbs up.”

SNP councilor Julie McKenzie wrote “Love it!” while another fan added: “Sincerely hope the @AberdeenFC are loving this kit as much as the fans are! Wow! Gorgeous kit!”

Aberdeen FC said the kit would be available to pre-order until June 23 at 5pm, although mini kits and womens adults shirts are not yet available.

The shirts will officially go on sale on June 28.
