Ranji Trophy: Tamil Nadu get Washington Sundar boost ahead of Delhi tie

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu arrived in the national capital high on an innings win against Saurashtra in their opening Ranji Trophy game. But they came without their captain and lead spinner Sai Kishore for their match against Delhi starting here on Friday as he was called up for India 'A' duty for the Emerging Asia Cup tournament.

However, the arrival of Washington Sundar would not be good news for Delhi who have perennially been an unpredictable team.

Delhi are also hamstrung due to the Emerging Asia Cup after taking three points against Chattisgarh on first-innings lead in Raipur last week. They won’t have star batter Ayush Badoni’s services for the game.

The young and fragile batting will have to raise its game. It’s time Yash Dhull put his hand up and delivered.

The spotlight will follow Washington over the next four days here at the Arun Jaitley stadium. For all his consistency while representing India, Washington is yet to set a Ranji Trophy match on fire.

At a time when Indian cricket is looking to groom the next batch of red-ball spinners after R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, this season becomes all the more crucial for Washington. It will be interesting given the head coach of Delhi, Sarandeep Singh, was one of the selectors when a 17-year-old Washington was blooded into the Indian team.

Sarandeep himself will be busy resurrecting the career of one of his other finds, Navdeep Saini.
