Rangers vs Tottenham: When was the last time the two sides met?

Tottenham travel to face Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday in what is a rare meeting between the two sides.

An under-pressure Ange Postecoglou will be aiming to secure all three points in the league phase game to get Spurs back on track after a disastrous run of form.

It will also see Postecoglou face his former rivals in competition again, having managed Celtic for two successful years.

But while Postecoglou will be familiar with Rangers, Tottenham aren’t.

Rangers Vs Tottenham: When Was The Last Time The Two Sides Played Each Other?

Rangers vs Tottenham isn’t a football fixture fans will have seen all that often.

While Spurs have faced Rangers in several friendlies over the years, the two sides have only met officially once in a two-legged affair.

Tottenham and Rangers met in the Cup Winners’ Cup competition during the 1962/63 campaign in a second-round tie.

It was Spurs who came out on top in that second round match, winning both legs.

Spurs thumped Rangers 5-2 at Wembley on October 31, 1962, with John White, Jimmy Greaves, Les Allen and Maurice Norman all getting their names on the scoresheet.

An own goal from Bobby Shearer added to Rangers’ misery. Willie Henderson and Jimmy Millar managed to pull two goals back for the visitors.

In the return leg, Greaves’ opener and a brace from Bobby Smith at Ibrox wrapped up a 3-2 win for Spurs, with Ralph Brand and Davie Wilson scoring for Rangers.

It saw Spurs triumph 8-4 over two legs and progress through, where they even went on to win the whole tournament. It would also be the first time an English club had won a European Cup.

The last friendly meeting between the two sides came recently in the 2022/23 pre-season. Spurs beat Rangers again on the occasion with Harry Kane netting a quick-fire double in a 2-1 win for Antonio Conte’s side.

Rangers do have a win against Spurs in a friendly, however. The two sides met in 2004, where the Scottish giants beat Tottenham 2-0 in a pre-season friendly.

Tottenham Injury News Update: Micky Van De Ven and Brennan Johnson Expected To Overcome Knocks

According to the London Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, Spurs have sent Cristian Romero for scans on a quad injury.

The Argentine returned from injury in Spurs’ 4-3 defeat by Chelsea on Sunday. But the defender only lasted 15 minutes after picking up another injury and was substituted.

However, in more positive news, Spurs are hopeful that Micky Van de Ven (cramp) and Brennan Johnson (illness) will be fine and available for selection.
