Rangers misfit Jose Cifuentes has returned to Ibrox following his loan in the MLS.

The Ecuadorian midfielder, 27, had been playing for Toronto FC on a season-long loan and the Canadian outfit had the opportunity to buy at the end.

However they have now confirmed they have allowed the player to depart and make his return to Glasgow where he will link up with his teammates in training.

It was Cifuentes' third loan stint away from RTC but he will be hoping to wipe the slate clean at the club with new manager Derek McInnes now in the door.

Toronto's statement read: "Toronto FC announced today that midfielder José Cifuentes has returned to Rangers Football Club of the Scottish Premiership following the completion of his loan with TFC.

"Cifuentes, 27, made 17 appearances, 16 starts, scoring one goal and recording four assists since joining the Reds on August 22, 2025. The Esmeraldas, Ecuador native scored his first goal for the Reds on March 21, 2026, against Columbus Crew at BMO Field, helping secure a 2-1 victory during TFC’s seven-match unbeaten streak from March 8 to April 22.

"Cifuentes played and started in the first 10 matches of the 2026 MLS campaign where he recorded two assists in a single match for the first time in his career with the Reds against Philadelphia Union on April 22."

Michael Beale signed Cifuentes from LAFC and it was Russell Martin who sanctioned his loan move to Toronto back in August of last year.
