Connor Goldson has been described as a ‘perfect fit’ for Nottingham Forest amid speculation linking the Rangers defender with a move back to English football.
The 29-year-old has just a few months left to run on his contract at Ibrox and he is widely expected to move on in the summer.
He is now free to speak to interested clubs, with the Reds and West Bromwich Albion competing to secure a pre-contract agreement, according to the Scottish Sun.
The two clubs are said to “have emerged as the strongest suitors” for Goldson, although it is claimed at least one other club “is pushing hard” to sign the player.
Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan believes the former Brighton centre-back would be an ideal signing for the Reds, whether they are in the Premier League or the Championship next season.
“The Championship is a step up from the Scottish Premiership, there’s no doubt about it,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“He’ll be playing in some really important games and will be just one step away from the Premier League.
“Nottingham Forest is a great club with a lot of history. They’ve got a manager who has turned their fortunes around and got them fighting for promotion.
“If they’re in the Premier League next season, it could prove to be a brilliant move. If not, then it’s still not the worst move in the world.
“He’ll shine through in the Championship. I think he’d be a perfect fit for a club like Forest.”
