Rangers kids suffer Sevilla defeat as tensions boil over after UEFA Youth League exit

Tensions boiled over on the full-time whistle as Rangers came up short against Sevilla in the UEFA Youth League playoffs.

The Gers U19s were hoping to make a serious splash by reaching the round of 16 as the likes of Leon King and Alex Lowry welcomed Spanish opposition to Dumbarton 's stadium.

Ultimately though it was Sevilla prodigy Carlos Alvarez who found the only goal of the game when he followed up a rebound to smash past Jay Hogarth.

David McCallum's team came through tricky ties with Hammarby and Bulgarian side Septemvri to make it as far as the tournament's last 32.

And there was much excitement when they were drawn to face a highly-rated Sevilla team in a one-off tie in the playoff round.

A sizeable Rangers support travelled to the spur their side on and they were left impressed with what they saw at times.

The lively Alex Lowry, who scored on his debut for Gio van Bronckhorst 's first team last month, caused various problems. He nearly found a terrific assist for Ross McCausland after running the length of the Sevilla half

But the Spanish side have built their Youth League campaign on a solid back line - they hadn't conceded in any of their last four in the competition and ultimately made it a fifth clean sheet here.

Rangers were handed a glimmer of hope when Sevilla's Exposito Jiminez was shown a red card with 13 minutes left to play.

That preceded some unsavoury scenes as both sets of players exchanged heated words on the touchline at the full-time whistle as staff had to separate them.

However it's the Spanish side who advance to next month's round of 16.

Rangers team: Hogarth, Devine, McClelland, King, Fraser, Lindsay (Weston, 52), Miller, McKinnon, Lowry, McCausland (Lyall, 71), Ure (Wilson,80)
