Rangers 'in line' for greatly coveted Club World Cup spot

Rangers could be in line to play at the Club World Cup in 2025, according to a report.

It comes as FIFA makes major changes to the way the tournament operates.

The alternations to the competition will see 32 teams come into place in two years' time.

Chelsea and Real Madrid have already guaranteed their spots, with the four Champions League winners from 2021 to 2024 earning automatic places.

However, it's believed that FIFA wants as much representation from throughout the world as possible.

And due to their changes to the qualification process, this means Rangers could compete in the competition in 2025.

On top of the UCL winners, there will be a further eight spaces for European sides to take part.

Of course, they will need to earn that spot - as it's been decided that only one club from earn country will be granted a place through their coefficient ranking.

So, as they currently boast Scotland's top coefficient, Rangers have the strongest chance of being involved.

The Sun reports that a win for Manchester City in this weekend's Champions League final against Inter Milan would be good news for Manchester United and Liverpool, who are competing for that additional place for England.

As things stand, the other spots would be filled by Bayern Munich, Roma, Villarreal, PSG, Benfica, Ajax, and Rangers.

The Light Blues' standing in Europe is so high due to their performance in the Europa League last year, when they reached the final.

The Club World Cup tournament will take place in the summer of 2025 but it is yet to be decided where it will be played.
