Rangers fans reckon they have created history this season – as the first club to get two teams to the Champions League.
Ibrox fans are buzzing after getting to the groups and they believe rivals Celtic should be grateful their coefficient boosting run last term gave their old pals a leg up as well. Glasgow will be rocking with Gers landing Liverpool and the Hoops having Real Madrid and even the bickering between the two will be at another level.
Joe Smith, Coleraine, said: “ Rangers are simply the best. Getting two Scottish teams into the group stages of the Champions League, now we can add more quality to the squad with the extra money whilst cutting Celtic’s money they have already spent. Great times.” Joe Sneddon emailed: “Well done to Rangers for getting two Scottish teams into the Champions League. One through qualifying and the other through the coefficient.”
Alex Jappy, via email, said: “Now that Rangers have got £40 million, why not try and get Billy Gilmour back from Chelsea?”
Ian McKendrick, via email, said: “It's amazing the journey Rangers have taken from the lower leagues to their standing in Europe. No other team has achieved it.”
John Bruce, Glasgow, said: “Rangers have certainly drawn a very strong group but, thanks to the results and performances we have accrued over recent seasons. We can go in to the group stage feeling upbeat about our chances.”
David Bryce, Troon, said: “I think both Scottish clubs have secured decent draws. I think Rangers can qualify from the group and Celtic have a chance of securing third place.”
Hoops fan Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: “I would like to congratulate Rangers in reaching the Champions League for the first time in their history. I also look forward to seeing the two biggest clubs in world football Real Madrid and Glasgow Celtic locking horns.”
Paul Connors, via email, said: “You have to laugh at all the bravado from the Rangers fans about getting to the Champions League. They should remember that Celtic are the Scottish champions, they are second best.”
Tom Williamson, Lanarkshire, said: “It's astonishing that Colak ,who scored a goal my dog could have rolled into the net, is now claiming that Rangers are the best team in the world. In reality they are not even the best in Scotland.”
Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: "I have to admit it was a great outcome for Rangers. But PSV are no giants in European football, the group stages are where the giants lie in wait. That’s the real test.”
Meanwhile, Jim Docherty, via email, said: “I think it is great that Celtic and Rangers have both qualified and surely we as a nation should rejoice in this instead of this ‘my teams better than your team' attitude. We need to strive to achieve the best we have ever done to make our mark in Europe.”
Erm, fat chance Jim. George Wilson, West Sussex, said: "It’s no wonder Rangers do well in Europe. We play against proper teams who try to play football unlike the defensive hammer throwers and we get competent and fair referees.”
It all went wrong for Hearts on Thursday in the Europa League – and even the BBC feed chucked it. Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: “Hearts have only got themselves to blame for their exit from the Europa League. If Jorge Grant hadn’t gone down as easy as the BBC’s coverage of the match they’d still be in the competition.”
Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, said: “Hearts lightweight forward line couldn't cut through a paper bag, and whilst Lawrence Shankland will score against SPFL teams, it’s clear why Berschoot dumped him.”
