Rangers boss Clement 'candidate' for Belgium job, claims national team legend

Rangers manager Philippe Clement is a 'candidate' to take charge of his country, according to Belgium legend Rene Vandereycken.

Belgium were bundled out of the Euros after a dismal campaign which saw them eventually eliminated by France in the Round of 16.

Manager Domenico Tedesco is under serious pressure after yet another Belgian flop at a major tournament

And Ibrox boss Clement's name was mentioned on the list of possible successors as Belgium started their post-mortem from the Euros.

Former Belgium boss Vandereycken - who scored in the European Championships Final in 1980 as a player and also managed  Anderlecht, Standard Liege and Twente Enschede - put Clement's name forward.

He said: "I'm not so much in favour of another foreign national coach.

"For me, Philippe Clement is a candidate, but he is stuck at Rangers.

"Many other Belgian managers are not available too."

Clement won 38 caps for the Belgian team between 1998 and 2007 and scored one goal against Bulgaria 21 years ago.

However, Tedesco looks set to get a vote of confidence to lead Belgium into the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
