While the Tennessee Titans have yet to fully indicate whether they are in a rebuilding phase or not, it is clear the team is trying to avoid making any long-term, expensive commitments to players and are mostly betting on potential with their free-agent signings.
Tennessee entered this offseason strapped for cash, and that has not changed after nearly a month of free agency. According to Over the Cap, the Titans currently stand with just $6.6 million in cap space.
Per Spotrac, Tennessee’s draft class is projected to cost $8.6 million, which means the Titans have some money moving to do, and that can come in the form of cuts, trades, restructures and/or extensions.
However they do it, look for the Titans to possibly make such moves in the next few weeks, as the draft is rapidly approaching on April 27.
Despite things looking rough now money-wise, Tennessee will have a much different situation next offseason, assuming they stay the current course.
According to Over the Cap, the Titans are projected to have $127.9 million in cap space next offseason, ranking as the third-highest total in the league.
Tennessee’s general manager, Ran Carthon, has done a great job clearing the way for 2024, with the Titans shaving $28.5 million off their figure for next year to get to the aforementioned projection.
So, while it looks like it’s going to be tough sledding this year for the Titans in terms of their ability to compete for big things, a potential spending spree in 2024 could help turn things around very quickly.
