Teams are allowed to activate up to two players from the practice squad each week and the Rams typically take advantage by bringing up the maximum of two. This week, however, they’re only using one of their allotted elevations.
The team announced Saturday that it has promoted Ahkello Witherspoon from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Raiders, the second straight game he’s been activated for. Witherspoon started at cornerback in Week 5 against the Packers and played 81% of the snaps in his season debut after playing and starting all 17 games with the Rams last season.
Xavier Smith had been promoted from the practice squad in each of the last three games but because teams are only allowed to activate the same player three times in one season, the Rams decided to sign him to the active roster in order to allow him to play on game day.
