Rams OC Mike LaFleur ‘in awe’ of what Matthew Stafford can do on the field

Mike LaFleur has officially joined the Los Angeles Rams as their new offensive coordinator, replacing Liam Coen on Sean McVay’s staff. The Rams hope LaFleur is an upgrade, but there’s no doubt LaFleur is getting an upgrade himself at quarterback.

He’s going from the Jets’ quarterback room led by Zach Wilson to coaching Matthew Stafford, a proven starter and Super Bowl champion. LaFleur can’t wait to get started with his new QB, building a relationship with Stafford in Los Angeles.

Having seen what Stafford accomplished in Detroit and now with the Rams, LaFleur is amazed by what he can do on the field.

“Matthew, even in his time in Detroit, you’d be in awe at a lot of the stuff that he can accomplish on that field,” LaFleur told reporters on Tuesday. “Even when he was in Detroit, just knowing what his teammates and the coaches felt about that guy, and then being able to actually get a little bit more insight when he came here, just by again knowing Raheem (Morris), knowing Sean and how highly regarded they feel of Matthew, so it’s going to be fun. A lot of times, coaches can teach players a lot of things but in more instances, players can teach coaches a lot of things too. So I’m excited to get working with him, learn from him, and whatever I can provide for him, I’m going to do. I can’t wait to start building that relationship with him.”

Stafford had a tough 2022 season, missing eight games due to a concussion and neck injury. He threw just 10 touchdown passes and eight interceptions, averaging the third-fewest yards per game in his career.

LaFleur’s arrival should provide a spark for Stafford and the offense as a whole, working closely with the quarterback and McVay to get things back on track in 2023.
