Rams expected to field trade offers for Cam Akers

Cam Akers was absent from practice earlier this week for the Los Angeles Rams and he was ruled out for Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers due to personal reasons. While everyone was curious about why he was listed as inactive for Week 6, Ian Rapoport has reported that the Rams are fielding trade offers for Akers.

When Sean McVay revealed that Akers wasn’t going to suit up for the Rams this week, he was non-committal to him being with the team moving forward. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that Los Angeles is seeing what offers they can get for the third-year running back.

The Rams selected Akers in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Florida State in hopes of replacing Todd Gurley at running back. The former Seminole flashed potential as a rookie with 748 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns on 156 total touches.

Sadly, since his rookie season, Akers has dealt with multiple injuries, including a torn Achilles he suffered before the start of the 2021 season. In his last six regular-season games, Akers has averaged only 2.4 yards per touch on 61 touches while scoring just one touchdown since returning from a torn Achilles.

Through the first five weeks of this season, the former second-round pick has carried the ball 51 times for only 151 yards and a touchdown while catching only two of his five targets for 18 yards. Darrell Henderson is expected to start at running back for the Rams while the team could express interest in making a move ahead of the trade deadline.

With Akers or the Rams — or potentially both — wanting to move on, it appears that he’s played his final down with the organization.
