Despite being under contract through 2026, Sean McVay isn’t certain to return as the Rams’ head coach next season. According to multiple reports, he’ll take some time after this season ends to decide whether he wants to continue coaching.
Buy Rams TicketsIt’s been a trying and challenging 2022 campaign, both on and off the field for McVay, so he wants to think things over before making a commitment to the team. Peter Schrager is friends with McVay and spoke with him on Saturday, and he shed some light on the situation during FOX’s pregame show Sunday.
He says McVay and the Rams’ brass have an ongoing and open dialogue about his future, so it’s not as if the coach will surprise them with a retirement announcement tomorrow.
“Spoke with Sean McVay yesterday and this is an ongoing dialogue with both he and the Rams’ brass,” Schrager said. “There will be no surprise. There will be no crazy piece of news tomorrow that McVay is stepping away and retiring and joining some broadcast. Sean McVay and the Rams are talking right now in an open dialogue about his future. Anyone that tells you that’s been decided already doesn’t know because he’s gone back and forth over the last several days and he truly just wants to take the time to reconsider everything.”

Schrager is as looped in with McVay as any reporter on the planet, being good friends with him – and even attending his wedding last year. So when he talks about McVay, it’s usually wise to listen.
Right now, it seems like McVay is just worn out from the 5-11 season the Rams have gone through and would like to take time away from football to evaluate what he wants to do next. That’s perfectly reasonable, and it doesn’t mean McVay is retiring.
It’s simply a wait-and-see situation.
