As the resident wedge guru at Golf Monthly I test all of the best golf wedges on the market, whether they are bladed wedges like the Titleist Vokey SM10 or more forgiving wedges such as the Callaway CB wedge. But I’m not sure I’ve experienced a wedge that gives you as much bang for your buck as the Ram EZ-OUT wedge.
It may not be a looker but if you simply want to give yourself a better chance at getting up-and-down more often, then this wedge could be what you’ve been looking for. The ultra wide sole and while the ‘V’ style design mean it’s harder to hit shots poorly than it is hitting shots well with this wedge. While the 56° wedge I was using didn’t specify what bounce was on the sole, it felt like a lot. This high bounce and wide sole combination is what makes this wedge so forgiving, not only on full swings but with pitches and chip shots as well.
The head itself has a large profile that is much more rounded than I personally prefer but I can understand why golfers struggling with their short game may like the spoon-like head with rounded leading edge to feel as if they can pop the ball up easily.
Like the aesthetics on the Ram EZ-OUT wedge, the sound and feel aren't anything to write home about. The feel is very firm off the club face and the solid sound through impact is one that will take a little getting used to. Despite this, the overall performance of the wedge was actually very strong. Other than the wedge being seriously forgiving, it produced adequate levels of spin while chipping and pitching. The face hasn’t been given the same amount of attention as some of the other most forgiving wedges on the market, so while there is ample spin and good launch from a clean lie in the fairway, there is a noticeable drop in spin when playing from the rough.
Because the face doesn’t feature any spin milling or face blasting for additional friction, I found the ball rising up on the face and launching high when making full swings. While this may suit golfers looking for more height with their wedge play, others may feel as though they lose a little control of the ball flight.
At the end of the day the Ram EZ-OUT wedge is phenomenal at what it’s designed to do, which is to be as easy as possible to use and should be regarded as one of the best wedges for beginners because of that. It doesn’t feature anywhere near the amount of technology as some other wedges on the market from the leading brands but retailing at just £29.99, it represents superb value for money for nervy chippers or those who want a simpler, stress-free solution around the green.
