Ralf Rangnick handed a reality check by Roy Keane after "fantastic" Man Utd claim

Roy Keane branded Dean Henderson's performance "dreadful" as Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup - just hours after Ralf Rangnick lauded the goalkeeper as "fantastic".

Henderson, 24, was handed his third start of the season against Middlesbrough on Friday night and was unable to prevent the Red Devils suffering a fourth-round exit at the hands of the Championship side.

The game went to penalties after regular time and extra time ended 1-1, and the England international was unable to keep out any of the eight spot kicks he faced.

Teenage prospect Anthony Elanga blazed over the bar in sudden death to seal United's fate and hand Middlesbrough a spot in the fifth round, but Keane believes Henderson was the main culprit in the crushing defeat.

The Old Trafford legend was equally critical of visiting shot-stopper Joe Lumley, who also failed to make a save in the shootout despite emerging victorious.

"The 'keepers were dreadful," Keane told ITV Sport. "The two goalkeepers were dreadful in the penalty shootout. They got nowhere near them."

The Irishman's withering criticism of Henderson came shortly after Rangnick claimed he was fully deserving of a rare start due to his "fantastic" work on the training ground.

"With him, we have a fantastic goalkeeper," the interim manager told MUTV of Henderson ahead of kick-off. "His training performances since I arrived have been outstanding.

"And that's why I have decided to give him a game tonight in front of a sold-out Old Trafford stadium. He more than deserves that."

Henderson has played second fiddle to United No. 1 David de Gea this season and he is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League.

For a brief spell in early 2021, he established himself as first-choice goalkeeper only for an injury over the summer and a bout of coronavirus to restore the Spaniard to his previous role.

Keane's co-pundit Ian Wright was equally critical of Henderson and Lumley's performances in the shootout, although he did suggest the outfield players had prepared well.

"He [Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder] said they had been practising. It looked like it," the Arsenal legend added. "Both goalkeepers looked like they had no chance the way they were diving all around the place.

"It didn't look like either of them were getting anywhere near them. They were dreadful."

While Henderson failed to make an impression during the shootout, De Gea was handed the night off and took to social media to vent his fury over Middlesbrough's controversial equaliser.
