Ralf Rangnick can solve huge Manchester United dilemma with a priceless Premier League boost

It's been a strange time at Manchester United since Ralf Rangnick became interim manager.

Not only have supporters been on a rollercoaster of emotions, but they've also had to adjust to the new manager's techniques, which differ sharply compared to what we saw under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rangnick has had a decent start in terms of results and his ruthlessness in calling players out is something we haven't seen since Jose Mourinho. It can only be commended.

However, major issues remain. Notably, Rangnick still doesn't know his best starting XI.

There are players, such as Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, who always make the team sheet but there are still areas where you can tell United's manager is unconvinced with the options he has.

One of those areas is left-back and since he's been manager, Rangnick has chopped and changed between Luke Shaw and Alex Telles.

Before the 63-year-old's arrival, Shaw was the firm first-choice at left-back Under Solskjaer, his trajectory rose rapidly and was arguably the best player in the Premier League in his position.

His goal in the Euro 2020 final epitomised a change in status for a player who unquestionably belonged among the elite.

Unfortunately, like a lot of the United team this season, his form steadily declined and Rangnick started giving opportunities to Telles instead.

Telles has put in some impressive performances and shown why United splashed the cash on him in the summer of 2020.

At the same time, there have been occasions where the ex-Porto favourite has looked shaky and not offered the attacking threat United need. While most supporters understand what he offers going forward, it feels a different type of personnel is needed.

There's a consensus that Shaw is the better left-back than Telles in the United fanbase due to his all-round capabilities, but it's clear that Rangnick still isn't sold on the England international.

However, there's a solution to all of this and it lies within United's academy.

We know that Rangnick likes playing younger players because they want to impress and can play at the energetic levels he requires. An impressive Spaniard knocking on the door, he could be the answer to the left-back conundrum.

His name is Alvaro Fernandez and it wouldn't surprise me if he's playing regularly for the first-team very soon.

The 18-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for the Reds, but with Telles on international duty with Brazil, he could make the bench against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup tonight. He trained with the first team ahead of the match.

Fernandez reportedly had the opportunity to go out on loan to a Championship team in the January transfer window and it could be significant that he has stayed put.

An attack-minded full-back, the 18-year-old Majorcan has impressed in the youth set-up and his dazzling displays have led fans to believe he could be the next big star to rise through the ranks.

From 22 appearances for Neil Wood’s sides across the EFL Trophy, UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2 this season, Fernandez has three goals and four assists to his name, showing his offensive qualities in the final 1/3.

He's also really comfortable in possession and if Rangnick is trying to implement his 'gegenpressing' philosophy, you need to have that.

It'll be interesting to see if he makes the bench against Middlesbrough, but even if he doesn't, his breakthrough in United's problem position is surely not too far away.
